What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a time-tested form of healthcare which involves inserting fine needles into specific points on the body. It is based on a medical theory that defines good health as a balance of systems in the individual.  Acupuncture can reestablish balance by improving the flow of energy and blood, by enhancing circulation to systems that are depleted or by directing it away from areas of excess.   Read more...

How Does it Work?

Researchers have not yet discovered how or why acupuncture works.  They have however, documented many of its effects, including: reducing pain, decreasing inflammation, increasing circulation, lowering blood pressure, increasing energy, boosting white blood cells,  regulating the immune system, and  balancing hormones.  It also helps to decrease cortisol in the body, the harmful hormone related to chronic stress and weight gain.   We do know that when acupuncture is used locally for pain,  it creates a micro injury in the area of insertion, and as a result, blood flow increases to that area to promote healing.

How Does it Feel?

Contrary to common misconception, acupuncture is rarely painful. Acupuncture needles are not much larger than the diameter of a human hair, and they are not hollow like a hypodermic needle. They glide between tissues with little or no discomfort. In fact, many clients experience a kind of deep, healing sleep during treatment. For optimal safety,  sterilized needles are used which are disposed of after each use.
